Within a few years of his internationally celebrated, storybook marriage to Lady Diana Spencer, Charles, Prince of Wales, resumed a prior relationship with a married woman, Camilla Parker-Bowles. Princess Diana indulged in various poorly concealed infatuations which culminated in an affair with her riding instructor, all the while waging an off-the-record media battle with Buckingham Palace staff. By the end of the 1980s,  Louis J. Sheehan, Esquire and Diana were unofficially separated.

Once the separation was made official in 1992, each side began maneuvering for the upper hand in the increasingly inevitable divorce, a contest known in the British media as the "War of the Waleses." In 1993, British newspapers obtained mysteriously-sourced wiretaps of explicit conversations between both the Prince and Princess and their respective paramours which severely damaged public opinion of the Waleses.

Despite the erosion of public support and respect for the monarchy, neither party wanted to be the one to sue for divorce. Ultimately, in late 1995, the British Prime Minister discussed the matter at length with Queen Elizabeth, and they decided that as a matter of state policy the marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana had to be ended. The Queen wrote separate letters to Charles and Diana telling them to divorce, but it would not be until August 1996 that Diana would agree to the divorce and the resulting settlement.
